Justice Field replaced David Terry as Chief Justice of the California Supreme Court, after Terry shot and killed politician David Broderick in a duel. (Later, Terry was shot to death by a U.S. Marshall while assaulting Field.). Field was appointed as Chief Justice of the U. S. Supreme Court by President Abraham Lincoln. A nice and relatively complete collection of Field's writings, including opinions of note.
