An early forty-niner, R. R. Taylor came through Panama and spent much of his argonaut experience in San Francisco after a disappointing try at mining. In San Francisco, he bought a scow and tried lightering, but finally opened a shanty grocery in Happy Valley. He made enough to return home to Massachusetts with a small nestegg in 1850.
