A LIVE WOMAN IN THE MINES OR, PIKE COUNTY AHEAD! A Local Play in Two Acts
DELANO, Alonzo ("Old Block")
New York Samuel French & Son 1857 36 pages. First Edition. Original yellow printed wraps, fine bound into leather-backed marbled boards with gilt spine titling. 4 1/2" x 7 1/2". Alonzo Delano was an author (often writing, as here, under the pen name "Old Block"), humorist, artist and, ultimately, a banker who crossed the plains to the California Gold Fields. As he was man of great generosity and popularity, the locals lowered all flags to half-staff when he died in 1874. He is buiried in Grass Valley, California. This play was based upon actual characters encountered by Delano in the Gold Country. As he states in the opening Note: "The plot of this play is founded on fact. The history of John and Mary Wilson is that of hundreds who have come to California--and their misfortunes and ultimate success is a type of what many others have experienced within the author's knowledge." The copy of the play itself is Very Good (edgeworn and toned from handling) while the fine binding is As New. ALWAYS FREE SHIPPING to any United States Address.
