Revere, a grandson of Paul Revere, served as an officer aboard the U.S.S. Portsmouth in the Pacific from 1846 to 1848. Under orders from Commander J. B. Montgomery, Revere landed at Sonoma, read Commodore Sloat's Proclamation and raised the U.S. Flag, thereby terminating the Bear Flag revolt. Several of Revere's plates are here reproduced in color.
