Folding map of The Mariposa Indian War, showing the campaigns of the Mariposa Battalion, in and around Yosemite. Rust-colored cloth with gilt spine lettering. Very slightly rubbed, but near fine, in a later custom mylar protective jacket. Largely unopened. This edition (later reprinted in 1975) is the sequel to the first published diaries of Robert Eccleston, under the title "Overland to California on the Southwestern Trail, 1849" distributed to the Friends of the Bancroft Library in 1950. In addition the diaries, this edition contains the aforementioned map, Dr C. Gregory Campton's useful notes and Introduction, a full roster of the Mariposa Battalion, and a bibliography. Eccleston was the only member of the Battalion known to have kept a contemporary record of the war. While pursuing the Indians, the Mariposa Battalion explored the Yosemite Valley, the Fresno Big Trees, and the High Sierra between the main forks of the Merced and San Joaquin Rivers. Kurutz 215.
