From the preamble: "This essay is reprinted from Ticknor, Reed, and Fields' edition of De Quincey's Letters to a Young Man and Other Papers, published at Boston in 1854. It appeared first in Hogg's Weekly Instructor, an English periodical, in 1852. The 1853 postscript was added to a later edition, from which the Ticknor, Reed text was taken. The sketches are taken from Punch, issues of 1849 and 1850, and are intended not only to illustrate the text, but also to liven it."
