Chicago: The Bookfellows, 1923. First Edition. Cloth-backed Boards. 125 pp. Presentation copy. SIGNED/INSCRIBED 3 times in ink by George Sterling. First: "Dear Fred: your little brother in Bohemia wishes you luck, love and leisure. Yours ever. George. 'The cool, grey city of love,' Feb 25th, 1924" on the front free endpaper.("The cool, grey city of love" was Sterling's description of San Francisco.). Second: "For Fred A. Schneider from George Sterling" on the dedication page. Third: Sterling's signature on the colophon, noting that 285 copies of this book were printed and that this is #174 (The number in Sterling's hand.) Buckram cloth-backed blue boards. Paper labels on front cover and spine. 6 1/2" x 9 1/2". On the rear pastedown is a bookplate and handwriting suggesting that Fred Schneider gave this book to Jo Schneider. Poet/Playwright George Sterling (1869-1926) was a resident member of early Carmel's bohemian group and a friend of Jack London, Mary Austin and Robinson Jeffers. On his move to San Francisco, he became a prominent member of The Bohemian Club, as was his friend Fred Schneider. Sterling took his own life at the Club in 1926. Mattila A28a.
