Schaffer's narrative runs from March 24, 1849, when he sailed from New York aboard the Flavius to California, to June 4, 1852, when he returned. He describes life in San Francisco, Stockton, Rough and Ready, Nevada (City) and Grass Valley (where he lived for almost two years), among other diggins. He describes the Gold Lake expedition of 1850. He narrative is generally praised in bibliographies.
