General Samuel Backus served in the California Battalion (Part of the 2nd Massachusetts Voluntary Cavalry Regiment) during the Civil War. Following the war, he served as Adjutant General of the State of California. John LeConte was Professor of Physics and President of the University of California at Berkeley from 1875 - 1881. His Brother Joseph LeConte was a Professor of Geology at Cal and a Yosemite expert.This is a very scarce association copy of a book almost never seen.
