Alonzo Delano was a serious writer and humorist (as "Old Block"). These are 36 letters written to two newspapers, while Delano traveled overland from St. Joseph, Missouri to Sacramento in 1849. Delano finally became a banker in Grass Valley, California. He was held in such esteem that flags flew at half-mast when he died in 1874.
