ORIGINAL POSTER: "SHE WANTS IT - WE DON'T". LINEN MOUNTED 1987
San Francisco: "Hugh Mann" 1987. First Edition. This is an ORIGINAL poster, captioned "SHE WANTS IT - WE DON'T". 1987. 20 1/2" x 15". Linen mounted. The illustration features an unflattering caricature of San Francisco Mayor (now United States Senator) DIANNE FEINSTEIN in a sailor hat and bikini backed by a life ring from the USS Missouri, while crowds of protestors bearing signs cluster at her feet. This poster refers to the 1987 efforts of Mayor Feinstein, some San Franciscans and the U.S. Navy to home-port the battleship Missouri in San Francisco. In favor of home-porting the Missouri was the fact that it would be located at Hunters Point, a depressed area of the City, and bring good-paying blue-collar jobs to the inhabitants of that area, plus an estimated $100 million to the City's economy. Opposed to home-porting were various pacifist and left-wing groups, who were responsible for this poster. The artist signed the name "Hugh Mann" (Human). The home-porting was killed in Congress, led principally by Berkeley Congressman Ron Dellums, citing environmental concerns. The Missouri now resides at Pearl Harbor. Very Scarce. Linen moujnted by Innis Archives. Fine. (The metal studs appearing at the four corners of the poster are magnets, holding the piece in place during photography; they neither penetrated not marred the poster in any way.
