Original maroon cloth with gilt spine titling. 4 3/4" x 7 1/2". The first 29 chapters describe Browne's 1864 trip through Arizona with his friend Charles D. Poston. Chapter 30 on starts with "Washoe Revistied" and describes Browne's trip across the Sierra Nevada, including Lake Tahoe, to the mining areas of Nevada, with some emphasis on the Comstock Lode, the Ophir works, Mono Lake and the Silver Ledges. One of the earliest accounts of Death Valley. J. Ross Browne (1821-1875), was an Irish born traveler, whaler, writer, artist, government agent, and reporter for California's first constitutional convention.
