Ezra Dane, George Fields (Publisher) Charles Lindstrom (Illustrator) and Edmund G. Kinyon (Foreword) to Caroline Wenzel of the California State Library : "This copy to Miss Caroline Wenzel with many thanks for her part in it (see p. 32) George Ezra Dane / George Fields / San Francisco, September, 1936". Illustrator Lindstrom signed on another front free endpaper and Edmond Kinyon signed on the last page of his foreword. On page 92, it is noted, "For the identification of 'Jerry' as well as the solution of several more of Old Block's exasperating name-puzzles, we are indebted to the historical detective work of Miss Caroline Wenzel of the California State Library." A series of sketches by Californian Alonzo Delano, who wrote as "Old Block". "A Sojourn With Royalty" refers to the efforts of Senator William Gwin in Paris to enlist support from the French aristocracy for the severance of the Western States into a "Pacific Republic" allied with the Confederacy. Alonzo Delano spent his latter years as a banker in Grass Valley, where he is buried. He was held in such high esteem that local flags were flown at half-staff when he died in 1874.
