San Francisco: A. M. Robertson, 1914. First Edition. Cloth. 141 pages. SIGNED/INSCRIBED twice by George Sterling. The first is an inscription in ink on a front free endpaper: "Dear Charlie: These verses, written within sound of the Pacific, I (?) on you amid the sounds and shadows of our Babylon. See page 74! Yours ever, George. New York, Feb. 24th, 1915." The second is written in ink on the half-title: "For Charles W. Miles from George Sterling." On page 74 is the start of a poem entitled "In The Marketplace", the first line of which is, "In Babylon, high Babylon,". Green cloth with gilt front cover and spine titling. 5 1/2" x 7 3/4". A collection of shorter poetry, starting with "Beyond The Breakers" written in Carmel and dedicated to fellow bohemian and author Jimmy Hopper. Poet/Playwright George Sterling (1869-1926) was a resident member of early Carmel's bohemian group and a friend of Jack London, Mary Austin and Robinson Jeffers. His later years were spent in San Francisco, where he died by his own hand in 1926. Mattilla A7.
