This book was a runaway bestseller when published. Author Conrad was an artist, bullfighter, restaurateur and author of 27 fiction and non-fiction books. He was once secretary to Sinclair Lewis. El Matador, Conrad's elegant saloon on Broadway in San Franisco's North Beach, was a very popular meeting place in the 1950's for locals and visiting celebrities.
