San Francisco: The Cliff House, Circa 1909. First Edition. Illustrated Wrappers. Unpaginated (16). Original string bound stiff brown decorative wrappers. Small drawing of 1909 Cliff House on front cover. 6" x 10". Side tabs. The first Cliff House (1864-1894) was destroyed by fire. The second Cliff House (1896-1907) survived the 1906 Earthquake and Fire with little damage, but burned to the ground in 1907. The third Cliff House was completed in 1909, and it is that building that is depicted on the cover of this Wine List.
Listed are "Appetizers", including the "Martini Cocktail", all for 15 cents. The most expensive wine is a full bottle of Pol Roger Champagne (Vintage 1900) for $6.50. The only California wines listed are sparkling wines, including "CALWA" (California Wine Association), Cresta Blanca, Italian Swiss Colony, Alta Vista and Paul Masson. Also listed are beers, spirits, mineral waters and "Temperance Drinks". There is an extensive list of "Mixed Drinks", mostly 15 and 25 cents, except for a "Tom Collins, Imported" for 40 cents. A rare piece. IMPORTANT NOTE: The apparent "smudges" on the cover and pages are NOT smudges; rather, they are printed on the paper itself; i.e, the creator's idea of art.
