He was raised in Hawaii, and came to San Francisco to become an apprentice to his merchant uncle in 1838. Davis became a wealthy merchant and trader in pre-Gold Rush California. The book covers much of California and Hawaii economy before 1850, Pacific Coast hide and tallow commerce and Rancho life.
