Nevada City, California: Legg & Shaw, Circa 1885. First Edition. This is an ORIGINAL bill showing purchases made by Chester W. Chapman, DDS, from Legg & Shaw of Main Street, Nevada City, California, during the months of July and August, Circa 1885. Single sheet. 8 1/2" x 14". Printed billhead, listing the date as "188_". Individual entries in ink. List of items charged include barb wire, nails, castor oil, drawer pulls, apple parers, peach peeler, iron and pipe. Interestingly, the labor of two individual workmen is also charged: "Mike", 22 hours at 40 Cents per hour, and "Carl", 13 hours at 25 cents per hour. Legg & Shaw, per their billhead, sold all manner of hardware for farms, homes and mines, as well as furniture and firearms.

Dr. Chester Chapman (1864-1956) was a prominent citizen of Nevada City, California. He was a practicing dentist, as were both of his parents, Allen Chapman and Nellie Chapman (Nellie Chapman was the first woman dentist to be licensed by the State of California). Dr. Chapman was also a mine owner, a Mayor of Nevada City and Chairman of the Donner Monument Committee for the NSGW. This unique piece furnishes a glimpse into life in a Gold Rush town in the California foothills in the 1800's.
