LAW AND ORDER IN SAN FRANCISCO. A BEGINNING

San Francisco: San Francisco Chamber of Commerce, 1916. First Edition. (16) 41 pp. Illustrated throughout from drawings (Pedro Lemos) and photographs (Louis Stellman). Facsimiles of newspapers, advertisement. Strung and stapled yellow pictorial wrappers; yapp edges. 7 1/4" x 10 1/4". A publication of the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce engendered by 1916 labor unrest in San Francisco. A Longshoreman's strike commencing 6/1/16 resulted in violence and at least one shooting death. The Chamber responded with the formation of a Law and Order Committee which started a publicity campaign. The Longshore strike ended on 7/17/16. During the Preparedness Day Parade on 7/22/16, a bomb exploded, killing 10 and injuring many more, as reported by the inserted newspaper facsimiles. (Tom Mooney and Warren Billings were later tried and convicted for the bombing, albeit on questionable evidence.) An 8/16 strike by three culinary workers unions resulted in some violence, prompting the Law and Order Committee to sponser an Ordinance prohibiting picketing, which was passed by public vote. This booklet recites all of these things in detail and provides a valuable research resource for the management view of significent episodes in the long history of the San Francisco labor movement.
