This is Josephus Daniels' copy, with his signature in ink on the front free endpaper, and his bookplate on the front pastedown. Daniels (1862-1948) was a North Carolina lawyer, newspaper publisher, Democrat, Ambassador to Meixico and Secretary of the Navy during World War I. A prohibitionist, he did away with alcohol on U.S. Navy ships. The term "a cup of Joe" is said to have originated when U.S. sailors resorted to drinking coffee following Daniels' prohibition of grog. Includes material on Emperor Norton and San Quentin. Cowan II, p. 214. Re-backed; several partially loose front pages, some soiling and edgewear; still, Very Good or better overall, now in a custom, clear mylar protective jackedt. Item #706
